Words & Brush Recipe Corner: Blood orange margarita

Blood orange margarita

This is the best margarita recipe using blood oranges – and the easiest.

Blood orange is the new black. (Photo: Sarah F. Berkowitz )

  • Yield: Serves 2-4
  • Prep time: 5 minutes

I picked up some bold-colored blood oranges while shopping, knowing I would try to find the best recipe I could to utilize their intense color and gentle citrusy flavor

The best margarita recipe I could find was a super easy one, perfect for this not-too-frequent mixologist! When it was time to garnish, that’s when I really had fun – and so will you.

Blood oranges make a fantastic margarita flavor. (Photo: lidante/Shutterstock)

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces tequila
  • 4 ounces blood orange juice, freshly squeezed
  • 2 ounces cointreau
  • 6-8 ice cubes
  • Himalayan pink sea salt
  • Garnish

  • 1 blood orange, sliced thin and halved
  • 2 blood orange skins

Directions

Blend first 4 ingredients in a blender.

Run an orange slice around rim of each glass, and dip into pink sea salt.

Pour margaritas into glasses, and add slices of blood orange.

Garnish with peel curls from remaining blood oranges. (Check out these easy cocktail garnishes, or an easy citrus curl garnish.)

Enjoy !

Happy Fall Everyone!

Summer is gone behind us as Autumn is sworn in.  A harbringer here are many signs.  Squirrels foraging more and I see more neighborhood cats looking for an easy meal.   Geese start coming from the north.  Crickets send a chorus of their songs ringing in the new season.   I have a cousin that works in Alaska.  We just happened to meet on FB by accident. We have the same last name, and he is also a writer.  He is already seeing the first dusting of snow on the mountains and pan ice forming on the rivers.     My mom is already thinking of pumpkin muffins with dark chocolate chips.    With the cool breeze it is nice to take more walks without overheating.

My kids are already thinking Christmas and I almost started playing Christmas songs this early.   For me I find fall a bit more inspiring with writing and journaling.  Take in the smells and the beauty as the season changes.    Even though we are still in the midst of a pandemic with stuff going on in the world, stay with us and have a coffee.  Tell us what you are doing for the season.

My goal this season is to get the the book writing done then edit.   It is nice to have a good diversion with a good book and close out the static.  Barnes and Noble are still around.  Do you have a nice book store to go to in your area?  Are you going to be baking for lots of company for Thanksgiving?  Ihave a feeling with last year we'll be catching up with family and friends t rejoice in life and love an dbeing close again.

Earth Tone Stamp Design

Done on magenta paper, the colors are cobalt, red, white, forest green, and orange. Flick through some of the white spots to create winged shapes, using swirls to suggest wind. A regular arrangement of such designs create a quilt. That provides a theme suitable for imprinting on mugs, Tees, etc. Plus, you get a chance to get out your paints and play, until a more studied subject is on the menu.

Novel Writing Programs

This is a sample page from a program called LibreOffice. I use it because it's a free download, but there are more capable ones like the Microsoft office suite. That one gives you the doc files that can upload anywhere. With LibreOffice, you must convert to rich text format (rtf) or pdf, but it's all there in the task bar.

The fancy first letter is called drop caps, which you can set as large as you want, then toggle off. Page size is set for 6x9, the most popular paperback format if you go that route. It works equally well for ebooks. The best thing about these programs is that what you see on screen is exactly how it looks in the published work. Sometimes with rtf, though, the drop caps appear as ordinary letters.

Another consideration is making a backup copy to cd in case your computer crashes. Text size is 12 point Times New Roman. Some publishers make a title page and table of contents for you. I find it's best not to use page  numbering, because unpredictable things can happen if they get shifted.

Margins are set to 0.8 on both sides (be sure to use 'mirror' on the page setup, since it will keep the margins the same). This is about right for a 200 page book. For larger page counts, the publisher has a calculation for setting a wider margin. That keeps your text from running right down into the divider due to margins set too narrow.

So get your epic on disk--it's the first step to one day holding that book in your hands.

Tuesday Story Outlining

Good morning and hope it is a great Tuesday.  I'm in serious concentration planning out a major action scene.  For this it seems better to see my drawings and my notes to handwrite it out.

The scene which the good guys take back what was taken from them, yet things won't be the same.  A story is a story and the reader, the audience I keep in mind always.  During the cooler times I get up to take a break and see our enormous Joro spider on the deck.  She is getting much bigger and gives me the creeps as though she is watching me, wondering if I am something she could eat. Joros are invasive and their numbers have increased. They have surrounded our house with their webs.   They get much bigger than this.

To which on the other side of our porch is the native writer garden spider.  She is quite amazing, and much larger as she tucks her web out of the Joro's sights.

While working on your literary piece or artwork, don't forget to take those little walks and marvel at the simplicity of things life has to offer us.  Whatever inspires you.  Oh and don't forget the coffee and yoga in the morning to start your day off.

May be an image of coffee cup and text that says "Good Morning I just wanted to share a virtual cup of coffee with you... thought it would be nice way to begin our day. Lhope today finds you well."

Does anyone still have one of these?  An old dinosaur typewriter..
